e.l.f. Cosmetics High Definition Powder Review

e.l.f. (eyes. lips. face.) Cosmetics is a brand that is notoriously known for having both really great products as well as really… not-so-great ones. Despite that, e.l.f. is a brand that many beauty lovers continue to go to because of their incredibly affordable prices (products as low as $1!).
In my experience, e.l.f. products fall on either end of a spectrum for me. Their products are either really good or really bad, there’s never typically a median. So, any time I purchase something new from their site, I am always curious as to whether I will absolutely love it and use it in my everyday makeup routine, or if I will keep it stored in the back of my makeup unit because I am too much of a makeup hoarder to throw away even the bad products.

thumbnail_IMG_3584I purchased the High Definition Powder from e.l.f.’s website, for the insanely low price of $6USD. Drugstores or beauty sections in grocery stores will sell e.l.f.’s products on their shelves, but oftentimes at a slightly higher retail price. I chose the shade “Sheer“, which is a fine white setting powder. The other two shade options are: “Soft Luminance“, a shimmery, beige toned powder that sought to illuminate while mattifying, and “Corrective Yellow“, a yellow toned powder that color corrects dark patches or under-eye circles.

The packaging is a rather bulky black container which houses the powder and a powder puff. The powder puff is quite firm and does not work well to blend the product, so my preferred method to apply this powder is either with a powder brush or with a damp beauty blender. The cap twists off the body of the container, which ensures that it stays closed tightly, making it very travel friendly.
Given this is a loose setting powder, it is bound to be a bit messy if it’s not handled carefully. But, this powder seemed to be extraordinarily messy. The powder somehow constantly found itself stuck inside the twist-off cap, so whenever you take off the cap again, powder spills everywhere, which is an absolute nightmare for a dense-white powder such as this one.

Onto the powder itself: The powder is a very rich, pigmented white powder. When it is put directly on your face (especially with the powder puff it came with) it is very intense. Without proper blending, there are noticeable white, patchy marks on your face from where the powder was applied.
Because I purchased the “Sheer” High Definition Powder, I did not have any illuminating or color correcting qualities to mine. The sole purpose of this powder was to mattify my face and set my foundation and concealer. Did it do that? Absolutely. It worked very well to get rid of any oily/dewiness on my face with little product. It left an overall matte finish to my face, without making it look dull or dried out.

Aside from generally mattifying your appearance, this face powder excels with baking and highlighting your face. Since the powder is a rich and intense white shade, it allows the light to hit it well to seemingly brighten your entire face without a lot of effort.

Overall, for the price and amount of product you are receiving, I think this product is worthwhile. Even if it is not the most flawless setting powder on the market, it does its job well and it does it at half the price of others of the same quality.

The few cons consist of the packaging creating unnecessary mess, the powder puff not being the best quality for its purpose, and the intense white cast it can easily leave on your face if not properly dispersed. Otherwise, it does its job of setting your makeup and removing oils from the face well, that the pros outweigh the cons.
